Scaling offshore electrolysis is no longer only about proving the concept. It is about proving long-term reliability.<\/em><\/p>\n

Producing hydrogen offshore sounds logical.<\/strong> Engineering it is anything but.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Offshore wind offers abundant renewable electricity. Producing hydrogen at sea promises to reduce pressure on electricity grids, avoid transmission bottlenecks and convert renewable energy closer to where it is generated.<\/p>\n

Making it reliable, safe and economically viable in one of the world’s harshest operating environments is not.<\/p>\n

That is precisely why projects like BUBBLES<\/strong>, a collaborative research project led by Sirris, matter. The next challenge for offshore hydrogen production<\/strong><\/h2>

The conversation around offshore hydrogen has evolved rapidly.<\/p>

Across Europe, pioneering projects are demonstrating different approaches to producing green hydrogen directly at sea. The question is no longer simply whether offshore hydrogen is technically possible.<\/p>

The next challenge is making it work as dependable industrial infrastructure.<\/p>

How do you minimise maintenance where every intervention requires specialised resources and careful planning? How do you monitor system health remotely? Detecting degradation before it becomes failure adds another challenge. So does building confidence in offshore electrolysis technologies before they are deployed at commercial scale.<\/p>

These may sound like engineering questions.<\/p>

In reality, they are also business questions. Reliability<\/a>, availability and maintenance requirements will directly influence whether offshore hydrogen production can become a scalable and economically viable part of the energy system.<\/p>

Why BUBBLES matters<\/strong><\/h2>

With several offshore hydrogen initiatives already underway across Europe, some may wonder why another project is needed.<\/p>

BUBBLES takes a complementary approach.<\/p>

Rather than demonstrating another offshore production concept, the project concentrates on strengthening the engineering foundations that future offshore hydrogen systems will rely on.<\/p>

Its focus includes reliability, maintenance strategies, remote operation, condition monitoring and technology qualification. Together, these help address a fundamental challenge: how to reduce technical and operational uncertainty before offshore electrolysis moves towards larger-scale deployment.<\/p>

Every successful demonstration increases confidence that hydrogen can be produced offshore.<\/p>

BUBBLES addresses the next question: how do we make sure it continues to work reliably?<\/strong><\/p>

Why reliability matters offshore<\/strong><\/h2>

Operating industrial equipment offshore is fundamentally different from operating it on land.<\/p>

Salt accelerates corrosion. Wind, waves and vibration create continuous mechanical stress. Weather limits maintenance windows. And every unplanned intervention can quickly become a complex and costly logistical exercise.<\/p>

That changes the role of reliability.<\/p>

Offshore, reliability is not simply another performance metric. It becomes a design philosophy.<\/p>

The technologies that ultimately succeed will not necessarily be those that deliver the highest efficiency under ideal conditions. They will also need to perform predictably after years of exposure to demanding operating environments, while minimising maintenance and unplanned downtime.<\/p>

For Exion Hydrogen<\/a>, innovation is not measured by what performs best on the first day, but by what continues to perform after years of demanding industrial operation<\/a>.<\/p>

That philosophy naturally extends to offshore hydrogen, where long-term performance<\/a> can matter as much as initial performance.<\/p>

Limited physical access also changes how an offshore electrolyser needs to be operated.<\/p>

If operators cannot simply send a technician whenever something requires attention, systems need to provide better insight into their own condition. Monitoring, data management and remote operation therefore become integral parts of the engineering challenge.<\/p>

The objective is not simply to collect more data.<\/p>

It is to generate the right information to understand system health, identify developing problems and support better operational and maintenance decisions.<\/p>

No single organisation possesses all the expertise needed to solve these challenges.<\/p>

Projects like BUBBLES bring complementary industrial and research expertise together. This allows engineering questions to be investigated from different perspectives, risks to be identified earlier and knowledge to mature before the industry commits to large-scale deployment.<\/p>

That matters because the next phase of hydrogen will not be defined by concepts alone.<\/p>

It will be shaped by technologies that prove themselves under real operating conditions and continue delivering predictable performance throughout their operational lifetime.<\/p>

Offshore hydrogen will not succeed simply because we can produce hydrogen at sea.<\/p>

It will succeed if we learn how to do it reliably.<\/strong><\/p>
